Cooper Square's David Kuperberg Tackles "Energy Performance in Multifamily Buildings" at Greenbuild Conference
NEW YORK, November 30, 2009 -- David Kuperberg, Chief Executive Officer of Cooper Square Realty, recently addressed attendees at Greenbuild, the world’s largest conference and expo focused on green building.
Greenbuild, sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), brings together more than 25,000 people each year to advance the conversation about how we can build a prosperous and sustainable future through cost-effective, energy-efficient, water-saving green buildings. With more than 20,000 member organizations that employ some 14 million people, and more than 131,000 LEED Accredited Professionals, USGBC is the driving force of an industry that is projected to soar to $60 billion by 2010.
The three-day event, held in Phoenix, AZ, included educational sessions, renowned speakers, and green building tours. Kuperberg’s rousing presentation, titled “Portfolio approach to energy performance in residential multi-family communities,” highlighted his firm’s ongoing commitment to help ‘green’ the 300 New York City properties managed by Cooper Square Realty.
“Buildings are one of the heaviest consumers of natural resources,” Kuperberg explains, “representing 40% of primary energy use and 72% of electricity consumption in the U.S.” His firm’s new subsidiary, FS Energy, was created “to combat this consumption while simultaneously reducing buildings’ operating costs and increasing their value.”
FS Energy takes a holistic approach to energy management by evaluating all aspects of power in order to bring innovative and cost-saving solutions to properties. As part of its service, FS Energy analyzes energy usage statistics against its Energy Cap database – which comprises years of historical data on 200 properties – to rate buildings according to a statistical standard.
“The result is effectively gauging the ‘environmental footprint’ of a building in order to make customized recommendations for conservation and identify opportunities for savings,” Kuperberg says. “Our ultimate goal is to reduce energy consumption within buildings by at least 20%.”
Over the course of 2009, FS Energy saved its clients more than $4 million through its procurement services alone.
Kuperberg was joined on the Greenbuild panel by Fredric Goldner, founding principal of Energy Management & Research Associates, and David Diestel, SVP-Operations at FirstService Residential Management, which is an affiliate of Cooper Square Realty.
